Why We Don't Show You Ads (And What We Do Instead)

Ad-supported apps are structurally misaligned with their users. The product that generates the most revenue is not the one that serves you best — it is the one that keeps you engaged longest. Here is why we chose a different model, and what that means for how ChooseOurDate works.

Why We Don't Show You Ads (And What We Do Instead)

Most apps are free because they are paid for by advertisers. You are not the customer — you are the product. Your attention, your behavior, and your data are what is being sold.

This is not a conspiracy. It is a business model. And it has a specific, predictable effect on the products built around it.

The Structural Problem With Ad-Supported Apps

An ad-supported app generates revenue in proportion to the time users spend in it. More time in the app means more ad impressions means more revenue. The incentive is to maximize engagement — not to help you accomplish what you came to do.

This creates a structural misalignment between the app's interests and yours. The product that serves you best is one that helps you plan a great date quickly and then gets out of the way. The product that generates the most revenue is one that keeps you scrolling, comparing, second-guessing, and coming back.

These are not the same product.

The most successful ad-supported apps have solved this problem by making the engagement itself feel like the product. Social media is the clearest example: the feed is not a tool for accomplishing something — it is the thing itself. You are not using Instagram to do something and then leaving. You are using Instagram because the scrolling is the point.

Date planning apps that follow this model have a similar structure. The browsing, the filtering, the comparing — these are not steps toward a plan. They are the product. The app is not trying to help you decide. It is trying to keep you in the state of deciding.

What This Means for Recommendations

Ad-supported recommendation products have a second problem: the recommendations are not neutral.

When a restaurant pays to be featured in a discovery app, it appears in results not because it is the best option for you — but because it paid. When a venue sponsors a "top picks" list, the list reflects the venue's marketing budget, not its quality.

This is not always disclosed. And even when it is, the disclosure is easy to miss and easy to discount. The result is that users trust recommendations that are not trustworthy — and make decisions based on paid placement rather than genuine relevance.

We do not do this. The AI Concierge recommends venues because they are relevant to what you asked for, not because they paid to be recommended. Our editorial content — the city guides, the date idea posts — is not sponsored. We do not accept payment for placement.

This is easy to say and hard to verify. We know that. The only evidence we can offer is the product itself: if the recommendations feel genuinely useful rather than commercially motivated, we are doing it right.

What We Do Instead

ChooseOurDate is a subscription product. You pay for it, and in exchange, you get a product that is aligned with your interests rather than an advertiser's.

This is a simpler model than it sounds. The incentive structure is straightforward: if the product helps you plan better dates, you keep paying for it. If it does not, you cancel. We do not make money by keeping you engaged longer than necessary. We make money by being genuinely useful.

This means we can build features that a free, ad-supported product could not. We can make the planning process faster rather than slower. We can give you a recommendation and then get out of the way. We can build for the outcome — a great date — rather than for the engagement metric.

The Privacy Implication

Ad-supported apps collect data because data is the product. The more they know about you — your location, your behavior, your preferences, your relationship status — the more precisely they can target ads and the more valuable your attention becomes.

We do not have this incentive. We do not sell your data. We do not use your behavior to target ads. We do not share your information with third parties for marketing purposes.

We collect the data we need to make the product work — your preferences, your saved plans, your partner connection — and nothing more. We do not build a profile of you for advertising purposes because we do not have an advertising business.

This is not a privacy policy talking point. It is a structural consequence of the business model. When your data is not the product, there is no incentive to collect more of it than you need.

The Trade-Off

The honest version of this argument includes the trade-off.

Free is a powerful feature. Most people, given the choice between a free product and a paid one, will choose the free one — even if the paid one is better. We are asking you to pay for something you could get a version of for free elsewhere.

We think the trade-off is worth it. A product that is aligned with your interests, that does not show you ads, that does not sell your data, and that is trying to help you accomplish something rather than keep you engaged — that is worth paying for.

But we understand that not everyone will agree. And we think being honest about the trade-off is more respectful than pretending it does not exist.

The Takeaway

Ad-supported apps are not bad because the people who build them are bad. They are structurally misaligned because the business model creates incentives that point away from the user's interests.

We chose a different model because we think the product we want to build — one that genuinely helps couples plan better experiences together — is incompatible with the ad-supported structure.

If you want to try it, ChooseOurDate is here. If you have questions about how the product works or how we handle your data, we are happy to answer them.
